Lake Martin is a man-made reservoir located in Tallapoosa, Elmore and Coosa counties in Alabama on the Tallapoosa River. The Martin Dam, which provides hydroelectric power, was built in 1926. This dam created what is still one of the largest man-made lakes in the U.S.

Since 1926, Lake Martin has become a wonderful place to live and enjoy recreational activities, such as swimming, boating, fishing, water skiing, camping, and golfing. People living here have developed a "Lake Martin lifestyle." Some have their primary homes on the lake while others from Birmingham, Montgomery, or other larger cities have a secondary, get-away home on Lake Martin.

Residents and visitors can use the marinas and get what they need from businesses in the cities of Alexander City, Dadeville, and Eclectic.

Lake Martin is part of the Tallapoosa River and its tributaries. Its surface area is 41,150 acres with an average depth of 41 feet.

There is another lake in Alabama with a similar name, Lake Logan Martin. That other lake is not connected to this one.

People from other states are surprised Alabama has so much natural scenery. No wonder our state motto for many years was "Alabama the Beautiful." And if you buy a house on Lake Martin, you'll take to heart our current state slogan and refer to your house as "Sweet Home Alabama."
