The Lake Martin Home with a Patriotic Theme: Welcome to "Fort D"

Does your house have a name? Ours is "Fort D."

We inherited a house--on Lake Martin, of a very important man: William A. Crim, Retired Lieutenant Colonel, US Army, He fought during World War II, Korea, and Vietnam.

I take his work and his legacy seriously. Like royalty in a storybook, we were given the privilege of "making it ours."

My parents were married in Fort D. This home has been the meeting place for my family to play with our children. And it's also my home office.

We are keeping a consistent nod to the US Army throughout the 2-story, 1970s ranch. It's a good time to do so with decor, because a patriotic theme is easy to find in magazines and catalogs, and locally, at places such as Mark King's Furniture, It's an important time to do so with our family because we are raising two small boys and want to instill the importance of honor and American pride early on.

In the excitement of selling Lake Martin and raising young children--and finding pride in the day-to-day things--it would be easy to forget the hard work, the literal battles, the estate planning, and the desire for a legacy that the Crims left us. With every dish (over 30 sets) and pieces of glassware (gotta be over 100 patterns) and a big salt & pepper shaker collection, I take pause and remember his job--fighting for our country, and her job--hosting cadet families.

I heard once that a person isn't dead until the last mention of their name. We think and speak of Bill and Peggy a lot. I want to make them proud. They deserve to be honored by what we keep from the story of their lives.
