Top 5: How to Host the Best Lake Martin Porch Party

I love to throw a party!

Nancy Hodges has entertained crowds large & small in her Willow Point estate. Learn more about this property. Listed by Lake Martin Voice Realty.

This is what we've learned about hosting the best porch party, after hosting friends, families, neighbors, and colleagues for almost a decade at our Lake Martin home:

1) Let the water be your focal point, centerpiece, entertainment, and conversation starter. A little Jimmy Buffett music in the background makes everybody feel better.

2) Think comfortable--pillows, towels, blankets, and plenty of seating is key--face your seats toward the water. Nothing has to match. Throw formality out the window!

3) "host local" Rely on our fantastic local resources for sides and desserts, so you're not spending time in the kitchen! How about a homemade cake from Who's Diner, or themed cupcakes from Sweet Gagas? The Super salad or a cheese tray from Catherine's Market? Grab your wine and spirits at Emporium Wine (consider an extra bottle for a hostess happy), and by all means stock your fridge with Good Ole Boys BBQ!

4) Fluff your stuff--if you haven't been to your lake home in a while, it has probably collected dust and spider webs. Call me for a short list of talented housekeepers who will get you fresh again. No time for all that? Toss a capful of Fabuloso or Pine Sol in your toilets and sinks just before your guests arrive. 5) Put thought into your guest list, and make the afternoon/evening/weekend all about them. Matchmake neighbors who need to meet. Extend your family gathering to cousins you haven't seen in a while. Seal the deal with your favorite business people in a casual setting. Bonus: Keep kids in life jackets the entire time (everyone relaxes knowing the kids are safe) and just go! Have a fun time, y'all...you're at the Lake!
